DESCRIPTION: French mantel clock, eight day time and strike, pendule a Paris movement, counting the hours on a bell and a single blow at the half hour, silk thread suspension, white and black marble and gilt bronze case supported on gilt toupie feet, the case front paint decorated below the dial with bunches of grapes and grape leaves, and with festoons of roses, forget-me-nots, and green foliage, with gilt bronze frame and beaded molding, on the right a gilt bronze putti standing on a stool and holding a basket of flowers, on the left a female figure with lyre, at her feet a quiver with arrows and bow, white enamel dial with Arabic numerals, signed in red "Piolaine A Paris", gilt hands, and gilt bezel with convex glass, c1790
CONDITION: The case is very good overall, with a few minor flakes in the marble, losses to painted decoration (that any of this remains is incredible), good bright and matte gilt surfaces, beaded molding at base painted gold, gilding on bezel probably restored, dial very good with minor scratches and faint hairlines at 9:00 and 10:00, hands may be original, glazed bezel at back probably a later addition, movement ticks and strikes, Ht 17"
